The area that makes up Valparaiso was established in 1836, but it was not until a year later that the city would officially be named Valparaiso, which means “Valley of Paradise” in Spanish. Although it was named after Valparaíso, Chile because David Porter – the man Porter County is named after – battled near the region during the War of 1812, the city still has at least one special, long-standing connection to the Spanish heritage. The word sage is meant to refer to a person who has a great deal of wisdom, and who can make accurate judgments. In many cultures it is the elders in society who are identified with this term because they are the wisest among a group, and because their age attests to the fact that they were strong and smart enough to survive so long. It is with this in mind that Valparaiso University’s Continuing Education program is inviting seniors in the community to participate in the school’s Senior Adult Growth through Education (SAGE) program by auditing classes.

Everyday junk can be transformed into art by the women of Thrifty & Chic, a small shop tucked away in a corner in downtown Valparaiso that then sells the exclusive art in a unique resale environment.
The five women who run the shop offer an eclectic mix of furniture, antiques, paintings, glassware, jewelry, garden art and much more. The women say their goals are to give old items new purposes and recycle things that would otherwise end up in landfills.
This is a good thing considering that the Environmental Protection Agency claims that the U.S. has over 3,000 active landfills and over 10,000 old municipal landfills. These landfills all have hazardous air emissions and leachate, or water runoff, and all landfills will eventually fail and leak leachate into ground and surface water. Read More

An Indiana Wine Rack Maker
Posted in: Sept 01 2010
A growing appreciation for wine usually means buying more wine, drinking more wine, and sooner or later needing a place to put all that bottled goodness.
